After a long career in investment banking, in 2005, Jeff Barcy was recruited from Credit Suisse to Hearthstone by Jim Pugash, its founder and CEO, to work closely with him to build and manage the Hearthstone business. Hearthstone manages funds for numerous public and private pension plans, university endowments, Fortune 100 companies and large private trusts. In late 2007, Jeff Barcy decided to start Ridgeback Partners to take advantage of opportunities in the distressed real estate market; he hired an investment bank to raise institutional capital and secured capital commitments from a number of institutional investors. Ridgeback Partners was patient in deploying capital, reviewing many deals in 2008 but waiting until 2009 to begin investing capital, including purchasing a number of Southern California gated communities like Madison Estates (www.madisonestatesliving.com) and Monte Sereno (www.psmontesereno.com) in Palm Springs. In 2010, Ridgeback Partners began to harvest a number of deals, generating revenue from the sale of assets at attractive IRRs and investment multiples. Ridgeback is able to offer compelling deals and values to consumers and builders due to its low basis in purchasing assets directly from banks and the FDIC.
